Shan Masood, the recently appointed captain of Pakistan’s test cricket team, has set an ambitious goal for his squad ahead of their forthcoming trip to Australia: to make history.
Pakistan has never won a Test series in 12 visits to Australia, including losses in the past 14 five-day matches. Despite this difficult record, Masood, 34, who took over as Test captain after Babar Azam stood down from all-format captaincy following Pakistan’s disastrous World Cup campaign, sees this as a chance.
Masood underlined his commitment before the team’s departure during a news conference in Lahore, saying, “When you have not achieved something in history, then you have an opportunity to change it.” He stressed the team’s determination to produce excellent outcomes for Pakistan and building a name for itself in the World Test Championship.
Pakistan currently leads the World Test Championship 2023-25 cycle, having won both Tests against Sri Lanka. India is second, while Australia is third. Despite Australia’s recent success in winning the last cycle of the competition and securing the 50-over World Cup earlier this month, Masood is confident in his team’s ability to recreate history in Australia.
